    Thank you for your amazing answers to this tag!!! I too began reading Austen with the same 3 novels: P&P, S&S and Emma. My favorite was Emma, until the 1995 P&P series came out. What fun it was to re-read it while watching the series......my favorite Austen became and still is, Pride and Prejudice. Do you ever re-read (or read for the first time) novels while watching a mini series?

      Jane Austen July has gotten me to do rereads with miniseries - and as for non JA books, miniseries got me to read Forsyte Saga and Daniel Deronda!

    It is a reflection of the culture at that time. I think its very important to know of our past culture in America. Imagine censoring Gone With The Wind and Mockingbird. Huckleberry Finn Uncle Tom’s Cabin we need to know how people were treated and the culture back then.

    • @HannahsBooks
      @HannahsBooks 15 часов назад

      @@VelveteenRabbit77Yes indeed-and I think it is important to talk about the choices specific authors made, too. Knowing that Mockingbird and Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Huck Finn were all specifically written to represent race in a progressive way for the time-no matter how we now understand their limits!-also feels important to recognize. That is a very different story from GWTW. We learn more about the complexity of racial ideology in the past if we look at the choices individual authors made-and why.

    Garcia Marquez convinced me to read "As I Lay Dying." As you probably know it was an important book for him. I think Faulkner's influence abroad is probably greater than any other 20th century american writer. "Sanctuary" was the first Faulkner book I read and stylistically is "reader friendly" unlike his other books. I've been searching for Jorge Luis Borges translation of Wild Palms. Apparently that translation had a huge impact on Latin American writers who read it. I once saw it on ebay but the seller was asking hundreds of dollars for it.

    • @HannahsBooks

      @@LibroParadiso-ep4zt Fascinating. I had no idea that Borges translated Faulkner! I really knew nothing about these links to Faulkner until your comment but I’m now fascinated and eager to learn more.

    • @LibroParadiso-ep4zt
      @LibroParadiso-ep4zt День назад

      @@HannahsBooks Faulkner runs deep in Mexican and South American fiction. Mario Vargas Llosa in an interview said he was enchanted by the world Faulkner had invented in his books set in Yoknapatawpha. The same with Marquez. Faulkner crops up everywhere. I was watching an interview with Guillermo Arriaga the screenplay writer of the film "Amores Perros" and "21 Grams" and he said Shakespeare and Faulkner were his greatest influences. Have you read "Pedro Paramo" by Juan Rulfo? That novel, his only novel, and a handful of short stories thematically are Faulknerian. . It had a deeper affect on Marquez than Kafka's Metamorphosis or As I Lay Dying. It's actually a good book to read with "As I Lay Dying." One final note on Wild Palms. In addition to reading it after learning about Borges' translation, I'd seen Godard's "Breathless." If you've seen the film, remember Jean Seberg's character is reading the book and she quotes I think is the final sentence in the book which from memory is "Between grief and nothing, and I choose grief." After that there was no turning back.

    what? You efficiently combine a tag with two readathons?!! This is genius. I love that Jane Austen went to art exhibitions, looking for what would be appropriate portraits of her fictional characters. It shows how she had the same intense personal vision as she wrote that a reader brings to films of favourite books, with anguished cries of "But that's not how she is! she is this height, with this colour hair and eyes...." Regarding the BBC series - there is a programme on BBC still of Andrew Davies telling about how he wrote the adaptation and confessing that (like myself) if he comes upon the TV series airing, he will stop to watch "just one little scene" and find himself watching the whole episode.

    Haven’t clicked on a video so quickly in a while. I read this novel for the first time earlier this year too, and also watched both film adaptations (I prefer the Coen brothers’ version). I loved Mattie, and all of the characters really. It was one of those novels where even the side characters who aren’t in it for very long feel extremely real and sympathetic. The sense of humor stood out too. It felt like a student of Samuel Beckett turned his eye on the Old West. I would agree that Mattie doesn’t really change, but I thought that was a strength. I thought it showed that revenge, and the environment of the often violent Old West, don’t facilitate personal growth. To my mind this fits with the somewhat comical ending where Mattie just barely misses seeing Rooster for the first time in years at the end of the story. As always, I loved your discussion of this book. 🤓
